Artist Statement

New York City is my lifelong home, and my canvases tell my story. My paintings have a strong narrative and a liminal quality. They invite the viewer to be emotionally involved, be drawn into the narrative of the painting, and enjoy the beauty of the color, form, paint, and always the light and shadow. My work is essentially Magic Realism.

I prefer working in Acrylic, true Egg Tempera and artist's pencil for their unique properties.

Egg Tempera is a ballet of pure pigments, thin veils of layering color, and lovely luminosity. So simple, and yet so elegant: pigments, egg yolk and water on a prepared panel. Tempera embodies the history of art making, the story of pigments and binders, and comes into the present as a fast, non-toxic medium. My acrylic and pencil technique owes a debt to the tempera experience which informs my color knowledge,  technique and color sense.
